PitLord Raid by Scylya Empty PitLord Raid by Scylya

Post  Scylya Fri Jul 02, 2010 6:06 pm

This is a raid I created about a year ago, the emphasis was on creating an interesting solo encounter with lots of options, ie the boss has many attack options.
This was implimented by randomly drawing cards for the PitLords activations, and with all the activations being completed by the start of the next turn.
Just from prior experience with attempting raid bosses, it seemed boring for the player if he only activated every 3 or 4 ticks, so while the tick cost for the attacks seems low it does keep it interesting for that player.

I havent touched these rules since back then, so hopefully these is the latest version, I have playtested this against a party of 4 but without the Terrain elements.

-----------------------------------------------

BOSS RULES

Health 12 x Number of raiders
Armor 3
Resist 3

BOSSFIGHT - The Pitlord cannot be force moved or force ticked up, nor have its movement limited or hindered by any means.
AGGRO - The Pitlord is Immune to Taunt and uses a simplified aggro method marked by a single Aggro Token.
The nearest figure within 4 spaces gains the initial aggro counter, if there are multiple randomly decide. Figures with Taunt or Protector gain priority.
If a figure heals 3 or more wounds in a single heal, they gain the aggro counter.
If a figure deals 3 or more damage in a single attack, they gain the aggro counter.
If a figure uses an ability with the keyword Aggro, or has the Taunt / Protector ability, they gain the aggro counter if their attack deals damage.
ENRAGE - The Pitlord gets stronger the longer the fight goes, at the end of ticks 5 he gains +1 Magic Attack, and at the end of ticks 10 he gains +1 Phsycial Damage. This stacking bonus cannot be removed in any way other than killing the boss.
(THRASH - Any adjacent attack from one of the frontal hexes that does not cause damage makes the boss do an immediate Melee Attack in Retaliation. /think this was an optional rule)

Infernal Stats
Health 2 x Number of Raiders
Armor 2
Resist 2

Activates during Ticks 3 6 and 9
Slam Range 1, Damage 5(melee) Crit: make a 4(Fire) attack at the same target
Flame Aura Deal 1 damage to all adjacent enemies at end of ticks 5/10

TERRAIN
THE LAIR OF THE PIT LORD

The lair of the Pit Lord is a cave in a volcanic area, there are 2 terrain features.
Lava Pools - These count as hindering terrain (2 movement to enter) and do 1 fire damage at the end of each tick a figures stays in it.
Giant Pillars - All elevated terrain here counts as normal for LoS, but cannot be moved onto as they reach the ceiling.
Standing behind them allows a figure to avoid damage from the Blast Nova attack.
If a figure behind it is chosen for the Charge attack, remove the Pillar.
If a pillar is adjacent in a front facing space of the boss during a Cleave attack, remove the pillar.
If all Pillars are removed from game, the raiders automatically lose - However the pitlord cannot choose to attack the pillars intentionally.

RANDOM ACTIVATION CARDS

MELEE ATTACK
Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: -1 Armor, Remove this debuff at the end of Tick 10
This target is determined by Aggro.
Text: "BEGONE BOTHERSOME PEST!"

Text: "DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HIDE FROM ME!?"

CLEAVE ATTACK (2 in deck)
Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: +1 Damage
The target is determined by Aggro.
Turn the boss so that the figure with aggro is in one of the front 2 hexes, then perform this attack on all figures in the front 4 hexes.
Text: "ILL SWAT YOU DOWN, ANNOYING GNATS!"

FLAME NOVA
Ticks 2, Range Unlimited, Damage 5(Fire) Crit: +1 Damage
This attack Ignores Aggro.
All enemy figures not blocked in LoS are hit by this attack.
Text: "BURN, BUUUUURN!"

HATEFUL STRIKE
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage 5(Physical) Crit: +1 Damage
This attack Ignores Aggro.
Randomly choose a target. Target Priority Adjacent without Aggro ---> Adjacent with Aggro ---> Non Adjacent

SUMMON INFERNAL
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage N/A
This attack Ignores Aggro

Any number of Infernals can be in play at once.
Text: "COME FORTH, YOUR MASTER CALLS!"

BELLOWING ROAR
Ticks 1, Range Unlimited, Damage N/A
This attack Ignores Aggro.
Place a -1 attack / -1 Magic Counter on each enemy, remove the Counter at the end of Tick 10.
Text: "RAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

TAILSWIPE
Ticks 1, Range 1, Damage 3(Physical) Crit: +1 Tick
This attack Ignores Aggro.
Target the 4 rear hexes of the boss and perform this attack on those targets.
Any Figure that takes damage is knocked back as many squares as it was damaged.
Text: "SO THEY SEEK TO OUTFLANK ME!?"

PitLord Raid by Scylya Empty Re: PitLord Raid by Scylya

Post  Scylya Fri Jul 02, 2010 6:11 pm

/cut and pasted from old forums

Had playtest with friend, trying out a 5 man party

Amon DarkHeart
Graccus
Fillet Kneecapper (This guys is a beast)
Vi'gor Darkbreeze
Zaritha

With fillets stacking attack bonus, he was swinging for 9 dice at the end of it, and with 2 stacks of sunder armor up, he was chewing through the boss - makes me wonder when Onyxia comes out will she have some rule to cap his damage bonus?

My friend thought he was doomed after the first Blast Nova, as it hurt the entire raid pretty bad and didnt think he would recover in time for another big hit, but made a good comeback.
Ironically the more powerful 2nd turn blast wave didnt roll as well and wasnt as intimidating as the first one.

We played til tick 18 when they had dealt the 60 health required to kill the Boss.
After that we discussed tweaks and ideas, and then continued on as if the boss had 75 Health (15 per raider), and here we really noticed a difference.
In the three ticks that followed, the Pitlord killed 3 raiders with normal melee / single target cleave. Attacks.
Thats when it really came down to a crunch and pretty much a 1% wipe.

One thing I did screw up (Didnt have my notes on me and was going from memory - was accurate for the most but not about the infernal stats)
The infernals were weaker than planned, weak enough that the lok's voidwalker pet could offtank 2 of them slowly getting grounded down.

Accidentally did them doing 3 damage for 3 ticks instead of 5, and forgot the crit effect and EoTs5/10 ability.
Still, we found them to be a nuisance but not annoyingly dangerous though (since they were controlled) if they were adding raid damage to the bosses damage, that would have made a massive difference since most of the figures were in bad shape when the 60 health was done.

Nice work on the aggro, however I'd change the rule for accumulation as on lamia morta, therefore characters gain aggro tokens instead of a single aggro token being placed from one character to another. That way it will maintain the basic wow mechanic of aggro.

I sure hoped I had people to try this raids with, maybe I can start convincing some of my friends, heh.

Personally I didnt like the agro rules for Corle's raids, the rule itself is much more accurate to the MMO but in practice it is fiddly with managing markers - or should I say fiddly enough for my liking.
Mine is just simplified with the one counter, not technically accurate to the MMO, but a basic summary that a big burst of damage or healing can steal aggro.

The Project PVE guys had their own aggro rules but I dont recall them, think they were on the same line as Corle's.

The rules looks really concrete and simple, yet it brings the true feeling of the Pit Lord's terror. I and my brother are so excited about this raid and working hard on making a Pit lord miniatures now.. Thank you so much!!!!

I actually have scratch-built a pitlord miniature using a D&D Bulette as the base and the torso and arms from a Formorian Giant, and wings from a Warhammer Dragon I wasnt using anymore. Unfortunately I dont have a camera so no pics Sad

I'm seriously tempted to make this my first attempt at making a mini. Probably sculpt it around a wire frame from scratch. I like modding minis, but I really want to sculpt this one.

wow I cannot wait to see your miniatures, but sculpturing it is really challenging and require too many things for me, making it from d&d is much more possible.. I am using bluespawn and War Devil (really like its tooth) . YEs! Bulette is definitely a very awesome choice for the base, but too late now, I have been painting and detailing it already..should have talked to you sooner Smile

I'll make some cards for your raid.

I would presume that your Infernals would be represented by Enraged Fire Spirits? What mini is the boss? It looked like it could be anything, but do you have something in mind, just as a filler? Like something you tend to use a lot?

The action cards seems pretty straightforward.

I'm pretty sure the infernal miniatures could be done the best by using infernal figures in World of Warcraft: The Board Game.. (so as Doomguards in the board games could become part of the miniatures game too)

I've never played the WOW Boardgame. What are Doomguards? Are they like the Jhuroons that are pets in Minis?

Perhaps this is the best question - what minis do want to represent the Infernals and the Pit Lord?

yea, I had never played the board game either, but I got one set from Ebay and found some figures, although have a smaller scale, are still able to fix to the minis game. Especially infernal and doomguards!! here are some pictures:

The infernals are as tall as minis Graccus, and the doomguards are as tall as Gorebelly

I see now. I could use those pictures in the cards.

Keep in mind Im talking about making cards, not minis. All the cards that you see for Corle's raids were made by me. I always used actual minis so people could use their own minis for the characters in the raids.

Finally the pit lord is done, away from my place now so I tried to take some very quick shots. The base from bluespawn of d&d turned out a bit taller, still feeling pity for not to talk with Scylya before hand, for the base from Blutte would definitely be better. The top part is of War Devil of d&d; armors, weapon, as you can realize, all from WoW minis. The scale of the pit lord, as a demon, is quite good with other minis (sorry for I don't have any other with me now to put in the pics), but he is still slightly shorter than Varimathras

Thanks Scylya again for the inspiring raid.. Game on!

Your pit lord looks bad-ass man! I need to become educated on other miniatures so I can hack them up and make cool things out of them lol.

It is seriously impressive though. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on your progress!

Yea, the figure budget for this minis is roughly only about $10 (from coolstuffinc.com). The whole figure is not in scale, but we can use parts of them. D&D large miniatures' seem not bad, the big problem is it is hella time consuming to find the right pieces that can fit in. I think the best way is if any of you want to make some characters, let all of us know so we can have some suggestions to save your time..
Thanks for the comments, learned a lot from your repaints too. After this one, I will try to make some more minis in hopes of turning the game more dynamic.

10 bucks is a much lower price than I ever imagined! I'll have to find some sort of D and D minis database to start getting some ideas. Dis you track about how long that pit lord took to make? Again I have to say it looks great and really looks like you took your time and paid great attention to detail.

I spotted the main figures months ago but never had a true moral force to do it until I joined this forum and read the raid. I ordered the figures, including War Devil, Bluespawn (d&d), Drokkar, Wilton x 2, Elendrill (his bow for the horns) (WoW) right on the day after that. As all of you, I love WoW miniatures and was so dissapointed about the delaying (my broken dream about Illidan); I am really glad that finally found this site, a living forum of the game.

And yea, detail is the value of every minis and to me WoW has a great standard about that, despite the painting job.

That is a very awesome conversion, it looks sweet.

Took this using a webcam, hehe
PitLord Raid by Scylya Pitlord

We should do a stat card for non raid games for a generic pitlord on standard base.

Also, another idea I had for a conversion was Arthas using the legs and possibly body of the Frost Giant Jarl.

Id like to convert up an entire custom set with DIY instruction on the miniatures and printable cards/ABCs - Tarnace hasnt replied to my PM though with his custom set.

I know what you mean, I was so hanging out for Souls of Vengeance, having illidan and especially Maiev would have been so cool.
I saw on a video interview they had a guy doing sculpts for the 5th series of miniatures, so it just kills me to know that this game is just hanging.
This has easily been the best and most fun ruleset ive ever seen of any game system

I too was looking forward to seeing how illidan would shape the game, because everyone knows he was going to be badass. Another piece to make the monster faction even better. I was also looking forward to the swarm mechanic and new equipment. Plus there are so many more epics I wanted to see in future sets. Grom hellscream, medhiv, maybe even an rogue like garona. The list could go on forever. Even khadgar would be sweet. A whole slew of demons. Like I said, the list could go on forever.
